Accelerating biodiversity loss poses a significant risk to the economy and the financial sector. The financial risks of biodiversity loss are attracting increasing attention, as evidenced by the growing number of conferences on the subject and the increasing activity of financial institutions. However, measuring these impacts is much more complex than measuring climate change risks. In autumn 2022, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, together with the OECD, the European Commission and several other actors, launched a research and methodological project to assess the risks of biodiversity loss and to develop a set of financial supervision tools to address them. The project ended in 2024, but the work is ongoing. As part of this, biodiversity will be the focus of the MNB's sixth Green Finance Conference in 2024. The conference, which will take place on 6 November 2024, will bring together a wide range of national and international experts on the subject.
